Senator Briggs, Isn’t Real Quick on Memory Recall! Is He?

This article (paywall) posted on KnoxNews website concerning when will the newly elected State Senator vacate the Fifth District County Commission seat. Briggs says he is waiting for Law Director Bud Armstrong’s direction. (Nevermind, too easy to insert a comment here)

Briggs identifies three fifth district residents that have talked with him about an interest in the remaining two years. The inaccurate quote in the story is interesting.

“They would serve from now until we have the election in September of 2016,” Briggs said.

Here is Briggs bio from KnoxCounty.org as you can see it states,

appointed to the Knox County Commission in February 2008 and won the general election for the District 5-C seat in August 2008. Commissioner Briggs is serving a 6 year term, having been elected in 2010 without opposition.

All Knox County elections, including the four where Briggs was a candidate are never in September. The Primary on March 5, 2008 (Briggs was successful in his challenge to Thomas S. Baer, Jim A. McEvers, Kyle H. Phillips and John Schoonmaker) The General Election on August 7, 2008 (where he survived a challenge by Independent Candidate Don Sproles. Then in 2010, the Primary election was on May 4 2010 (Briggs was unopposed) and the General Election on August 5, 2010 (Briggs was again unopposed)

Briggs confusion may be that after an election in August, winning candidates begin serving on September 1 following the August election. Where he got “until we have the election in September of 2016” is troubling.

Thankfully, I live and am represented in the State Senate by State Senator Becky Duncan Massey. So, I won’t have to question her recall.

Interesting, the three candidates that have expressed interest to Briggs are Knox County Board of Zoning Appeals Member and former unsuccessful 2004 and 2008 County Commission Candidate John Schoonmaker, Seventh District Republican State Executive Committeeman Ken Gross and the President of Council of West Knox County Homeowners Margot Kline. I have also heard that Dr. Aaron G. Margulies, MD a Conservative Activist and Leader of Republican Jewish Coalition Knoxville Chapter may also have an interest. Former Black Wednesday County Commissioner, Former Interim Knox County Trustee and Current Property Assessor employee Craig Leuthold has been rumored to have an interest. There will likely be others expressing interest as Briggs announces his departure and the Commission solicits resumes and conducts interviews.
