Bud Armaturing and Nathan Rowell spoke to the Center City Republican Club. The first joint appearance of both Republican candidates. Both native Knox Countians, Armstrong from the Carter community, Rowell from the West High School community. Armstrong was a TVA employee who became a licensed lawyer less than 10 years ago. Armstrong a former Co Commussioner of the 8th district, lost a 2010 race for County Commissioner at large to now Trustee Ed Shouse. Who was elected to Law Director in 2012.
Rowell a licensed and active Attorney for nearly 30 years has spent nearly his entire career representing city and counties in legal matter. Rowell while new to the active Republicsn scene is not new to the Republican Party or our community. Rowell is a life long Republican has a bonafide Republican voting record. Very acrive in leadership of his church Church Street United Methodist, where he serves in leadership and serves on the Wesley House Board. The Wesley House has grown immensely in size and program offerings during Rowell’s service as Chairman.
Both candidates did answer a couple questions. One was about why Rowell had not been speaking to other Republican clubs and the answer was he hasn’t been invited but he has several in the next couole of weeks. Another was if the law director provi legal advice to citizens and the answer is no, they only represnt the government. Which led to a question of if an elected official gets sued or in trouble in their individual capacity. For example last week we learned through a WBIR news story that lame duck Property Assessor Phil Ballard is represented by Criminal Defense lawyer Don Bosch, did Armstrong approve that outside counsel hiring? Armstrong said no, the law director is not involved in that particular issue.
