I received numerous stories that the Principal at Carter High School is prohibiting students from displaying USA flags on their vehicles. I contacted the Knox County Public Affairs department and she contacted the school.
The rationale is, “In the past, students have placed full-size flags representing different interests on their vehicles, which resulted in various complaints. To be fair across all student groups, the principal decided not to allow any flags on vehicles on school campus.”
I asked a follow-up, isn’t that a violation of first amendment right? When I hear back you will know.
In the meantime, if you are inclined you can contact Knox County Schools Superintendent Bob Thomas, here or call 865-594-1800 and Carter High School Principal Mrs. Angie Messer, here or call 865-933-3434. You can TRY to contact the Carter area School Board Member Mike McMillan, here or 865-933-0300
To be fair I went to this high school last year and we had a big incident with flags that resulted in threats and drama. I think it was in everyone’s best interest that we avoid any of that.
Well, let me tell ya what it is to me, I am a #citizeninformer for more than 15 years. a Graduate of Carter, 35 years ago, a former Knox County School Board Member 16-20 years ago & Vice Chair of the Board 17 years ago. I have won by Summary Judgement a lawsuit about libel/slander, I LOVE the first amendment, even when people say, post, circulate lies about me.
IF Principal Messer and her team were unable to handle/educate about the first amendment with threats and drama over a first amendment flag issue, I believe Superintendent Thomas can find a Principal and team that can and will.
They at (Carter High) pledge to the flag every day at Carter I am told. They require every student to take the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Apptitude Battery Test) I am told. BUT THEY CAN NOT HAVE AN AMERICAN FLAG ON THIER VEHICLE.
I am not allowing this FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT to go away.
