Johnson City— May 20, 2020 — Today, First District Congressional Candidate Jay Adkins announced that he will be providing 18,000 American Flags to mark the graves at Mountain Home National Cemetery over Memorial Day weekend. Jay Adkins, an Iraq war Veteran, was dismayed by the Department of Veterans Affairs recent move to disallow the Boy Scout’s tradition of putting out flags at national cemeteries for Memorial Day. “Memorial Day is one of our Nation’s sacred holidays,” Adkins said. “It is the time we take to remember those who have given their lives so that we can enjoy freedom.”
Community Involvement:
The administration at Mountain Home is allowing individuals and groups of up to ten persons to come to the cemetery, pay their respects, and place a flag if they wish. However, they will not be providing flags, as they had in the past for the Boy Scouts. Jay will be at Mountain Home National Cemetery beginning at 8:00 am on Saturday, May 23 to provide flags to anyone who wants to visit. “I hope Scout groups, veterans’ organizations, church groups, and individuals in the community will come by and spend some time to remember that freedom isn’t free,” said Jay Adkins.
