Knoxville, August 17th 2023 – The city of Knoxville is facing a critical lack of affordable housing, leading to a surge in homelessness and an alarming rise in rent prices. Predatory developers have capitalized on HUD-matured properties, exacerbating the problem by doubling or even tripling rental rates, leaving many families struggling to make ends meet. Recent data indicates that a staggering 61% of the homeless population in Knoxville can be attributed to the dearth of affordable homes and the failure of wage increases to keep pace with the rising cost of living.
Despite the pressing nature of this crisis, the current mayor’s dismissive stance on seeking pay raises from employers as a solution highlights the need for proactive and compassionate leadership. In light of this, Mayoral Candidate Constance Every is urging for a bold and comprehensive housing plan, such as the community land trust model. This innovative approach, already in practice with the Narrowridge Land Trust in Grainger County, aims to provide affordable housing options for working-class families, fostering stability and growth within the community.
Furthermore, the city’s Recode policy, initially introduced with the intent to encourage development, has inadvertently stifled middle-income housing, impeding growth and urban development. Constance Every, Mayoral Candidate, Knoxville is rallying for policy amendments to address this zoning code issue and to revitalize middle-income housing initiatives.
“The time has come for Knoxville to confront its affordable housing crisis head-on. It is imperative that city officials, community leaders, and stakeholders collaborate to implement effective and sustainable solutions. By embracing initiatives like the community land trust model and reevaluating zoning policies, Knoxville can pave the way towards a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous future for all its residents.” – Constance Every Mayoral Candidate Knoxville 2023.
