Knox Schools Land Deal in Farragut has Many Questions with Few Answers

In August 2022, Knox Schools purchased the Scott Brothers / McFee Road property without any discussion of what other properties had been vetted. By December 2022 / January 2023 Knox Schools walked away from the option to purchase, the Town of Farragut (through it’s Mayor and Town Attorney) have now signed an intent to purchase the Scott Brothers / McFee Road Property by late October 2023.

On Thursday September 28, the Knox County School Board Agenda for October 2 and 4, 2023 have this contract to purchase 41 acres along Boring Road for $4,890,500 (right in the center of town). Back in 2020, 2021 the need for an elementary school to serve the Choto Road, So. Northshore Drive and Martel Road’s explosive student population. The Scott Brother / McFee Road property didn’t serve the need as the underpass and the railroad tracks were problematic in serving the population that needed the school.

It seems that now the move is to build a middle school (I guess the elementary age kids are aging since the schools initially needed an elementary school). Anyway, the Boring Road property at no fault of Mr. Doug Horne as he has tried, Senior Living, Apartments, single family residences all facing opposition. However, for the schools, this still doesn’t serve the Choto Road, So. Northshore Drive, Martel Road population. Again, no public discussion about what properties have been have been examined. From this writers experience on the School Board, two decades ago. Public Discussions were always conducted on all properties that had been considered and why or why not they were being recommended.

This Farragut area online publication has posted here on August 25, 2023 about sources the author of that particular online publication has that land near Fox Run community, west of Fox Den community was discouraged.

I am told that School Board Member Horn has said that a Middle School will be built on Boring Road. The Primary School will be vacated and (assumably become a surplus property for Knox County Schools and Knox County) the Primary will be moved to the Intermediate school. The Intermediate School to be moved to the Middle School. I have not seen these communications, it is from sources of mine. If it is true, it still does not serve the Choto Road, So. Northshore Drive, Martel Road population. So, I guess a few more private schools must pop up to serve the students in the furthest Southwest quadrant.

The School Board Members I have messaged, talked to since Friday’s published school board agenda, know everything I and anyone else reading the agenda know. Or at least that is what they’ve told me. Monday will be interesting.
