Speaker Sexton and Lt. Gov. Randy McNally announced their intention to pass legislation in the upcoming session to address rogue local governments bucking state law:
“Local governments who want to be progressive & evade state laws will lose shared sales tax funding. Subversive attempts to adopt sanctuary cities, allow boys in girl’s sports, limit 2A rights or other attempts will be met with stiff resistance. We hope they change course immediately.” –Speaker Sexton via X
The Press Release 👇🏼
(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) — Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R-Crossville) and Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally (R-Oak Ridge) are taking action to block local governments from any attempts to circumvent state law by politicized ballot measures or ordinances.
The Legislature will not tolerate any attempts to go rogue and perform political sideshows. If they do not want to participate within the state and state laws, then they do not need to participate in the state’s successes. Both Speakers will be acting to withhold state shared sales tax to any local government who attempts to take this type of action.
The Tennessee Constitution is very clear about the Legislature’s duty to maintain oversight of cities and counties. Both Speakers expect that any local government that has or will attempt to override state laws will rectify or drop them in the very near future.
“With the recent actions of the progressive, soft-on-crime DA in Shelby County and the Memphis City Council’s continued efforts to override state law with local measures, we feel it has become necessary to take action and protect all Tennesseans’ rights and liberties. We hope they will change course immediately.” – Speaker Sexton
“The Tennessee Constitution clearly outlines the roles and responsibilities of the state and local governments. Shelby County needs to understand that despite their hopes and wishes to the contrary, they are constrained by these explicit constitutional guardrails.”-Lt. Gov. McNally
Deplorable’s Dinner
The Speaker traveled to Rock Island last weekend for the annual Van Buren County Deplorables Dinner!
“What a delightful group of deplorables! Great evening on the farm with a lot of friends. Can’t wait for next year!”
-Speaker Sexton
COLLIERVILLE COUNTY LEADERSHIP:
Chairman Vaughan brought the Collierville Leadership group to the Capitol this week and Speaker Sexton stopped by for a conversation! They spoke about the legislature’s accomplishments from last session and their plans for the 114th General Assembly.
FFA AT THE WILSON COUNTY FAIR:
Speaker Sexton attended the Tennessee FFA Association’s 9th Annual Ham Breakfast at the Wilson County Fair! This event has grown larger and larger each year and the Speaker always enjoys getting to meet with all of these bright young students from across the state. This year’s Ham Breakfast was highlighted by remarks from the students, a ham auction and the keynote speaker, country legend and former FFA member, Trace Adkins!
“Exhibits, rides, Trace Adkins, a $25,000 ham – the Tennessee State Fair has it all! Great morning at the FFA’s 9th Annual Ham Breakfast. Always fun to connect with these impressive young students”
-Speaker Sexton
SENIOR DAY AT THE CUMBERLAND COUNTY FAIR:
Wilson County may be the largest, but the Cumberland County Fair is Speaker Sexton’s favorite by far! Speaker Sexton stopped over last week to talk with folks from 127 and Fair Park Senior Centers during the Fair’s Senior Day on Wednesday.
The weather cooled down which made it perfect for fairgoers all week. We hope everyone is able to get out and enjoy one of the many wonderful fairs taking place across the state!
WHAT ARE THEY/THEM THINKING??
Speaker Sexton didn’t hold back when he saw the ridiculous ‘pronouns’ on the Harris for President resume:
“If progressives put as much time into making America great again, as they do thinking about pronouns and flip flopping on issues, our country would not be facing terrorists coming across the border, Bidenflation, appearing weak to the world & electing soft on crime DA’s like Steve Mulroy.” -Speaker Sexton via X
