Great idea, Duncan. The typical plan put forward by folks around here–“open new VA hospitals inside old, closed private hospital facilities (like Baptist or St Mary’s),”–might make for a good sound bite, but expanding the VA as it is now–broken and failed–merely grows a bloated, low-quality, healthcare bureaucracy even further beyond its means. By forcing veterans into the broken VA system, we have created a second-class citizenry for those returning from duty in our all volunteer military. Force the VA to compete for patients by offering private health insurance to veterans–it’s the least we can do for those who have done so much for all of us.
