During the May Republican Primary and in the August General Election, members of five different Blount Tea Party Groups actively supported the election of 11“Citizen” candidates for positions on the Blount County Commission. Voters elected 6 citizen candidates to represent the interests of the Tax Payers.
One of these citizen candidates elected was Commissioner Tona Monroe. Ms. Monroe has long been actively involved in advocating accountability and responsibility to the taxpayer for the wasteful practices of the Blount County government. Ms. Monroe is so committed to the principle of her term in office as 1) a true public service and 2) to the principle of protecting the taxpayer of wasteful government spending; that she has chosen to refuse to accept the $405 monthly stipend salary.
The following is a quote from Commissioner Monroe:
“When I ran for office, I promised my constituents that I would be a vigilant protector of the taxpayer’s money against government waste. That promise starts with me. Unfortunately Politicians all too often give “lip service” to being Public Servants and then immediately betray the taxpayer trust. For this reason, I’ve decided not to take a salary for my service on the County Commission.”
Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett has repeatedly said that the citizens of Knox County pay him way to much money. Now with Blount County Commissioner Monroe putting action to her words. When will Knox County’s Mayor put up?
