A Week In Nashville, Speaker Sexton

With both Speakers and members from both chambers present, Governor Bill Lee took to the House floor Monday evening to give his 7th State of the State address. His speech highlighted Tennessee’s past successes while emphasizing his vision for the state as a leader in future innovation: 

“The best way to honor TN’s storied history is to climb the next mountain, chart new waters & lead the next era of American innovation. May the Lord continue to pour out His favor & bless the people of the great state of Tennessee.” -Governor Lee

UT DAY ON THE HILL:

President Boyd and the University of Tennessee’s chancellors of stopped by the office to meet with both Speakers during UT Day on the Hill! They spoke about the continued growth across all of their campuses and their plans for the future. As an alum, the Speaker always enjoys hearing about the state of the University and their amazing impact across the entire state.

MEETING WITH THE MAYORS:

This week, Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly, Memphis Mayor Paul Young, Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell, and Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon visited the office to discuss their cities’ progress and challenges with the Speaker. While they may not agree on everything, they have built a strong working relationship and share a common goal—making our state the best it can be.

FAMILIAR FACES IN NASHVILLE:

Some friends and constituents of Speaker Sexton stopped by the office during the Tennessee Banker’s Association’s Day on the Hill! Members from Crossville’s First National Bank of Tennessee came by to say hello and talk with Speaker Sexton in between meetings. It’s always great to see some familiar faces from home when he’s in Nashville! 

THE FUTURE IS IN GOOD HANDS:

This week also brought us a special visitor from Memphis! Joseph is a 4th grader who has a passion for government in politics. Representative Harris’ office hosted Joseph on Wednesday and brought him around the Cordell Hull to meet legislators and get an inside look into state politics! 

“Great to meet Joseph, a bright 4th grader from Memphis who loves social studies and has a goal of becoming Governor one day! I was honored to sign his Blue Book and spend some time with him.” –Speaker Sexton
